Ive been thinking it would be great to get together and see what we can come up with to add a musical dimension to Transition...especially as FUN is important (but not deadly seriously important!) and music is so very good for the heart and soul, eh?

Some music and/or singing at our meetings and other events could make all the difference.

In posting this I'm hoping to be a catalyst rather than some sort of leader; maybe we could have a meeting of interested people with some time for chatting and playing music -and take things from there?
So what do you think, Transition Musicians?

Hello,
I'm from Transition Cliftonwood and Hotwells where we hope to hold a meeting on 'Energy' sometime towards the end of January.

We have already had a meeting themed 'Food', which has led to the setting up of a Food Group, and with any luck an Energy group will grow out of our january meeting.

We would like to have people/a person at our meeting who could give a presentation on energy, especially with regards to making homes more energy efficient and on sources of energy eg solar panels, windmills.

So, I'm wondering is there anyone out there who would like to speak at our meeting?
Or maybe you know of someone else who might want to?

Thankyou

Bristol City Council are currently calling on the the people of Bristol to look around their communities for land or buildings which could have alternative uses and make suggestions about this to the Council by 19th December. Transition Bristol have arranged a meeting about this for 3rd December.
Before this happens, I would like to suggest a positive action which we could all start thinking about. It would be great if, in the days between 3rd and 19th, we get together as Transition neighbourhoods to plot areas of disused land and buildings and put in suggestions.
It would be great to have a special afternoon set aside where a group make a fun journey with snacks, drinks, maps and paper and get to know each other while marking out such land. We could try and get other groups where there is no Transition group but perhaps an active community group or Neighbourhood Partnership involved too, and blog about our experiences here.
Part two of this plan would fit into the work of Bill McKibben http://www.350.org
It would be great if we could do something like London who are looking for 2012 urban growing spaces to link in with the olympics. Imagine if Bristol could aim for 350 urban growing spaces. This would be a great Transition project for Bristol. Anyone interested in doing something around this?

Bristol City Council has provided a page on their website about how to apply for a community grant from the council. Unfortunately, it's not just "Pass Go and Receive £200" a la Monopoly, but there are instructions on how to apply for a One-off Grant (via Quartet) and how to get longer term funding.

The part that is potentially relevant to Transition is: "community engagement organisations in deprived neighbourhoods in the city" and potentially "community resource services being delivered in deprived neighbourhoods".

There are funding surgeries on 14th and 19th August and 3rd September for new groups not previously funded by The City Council, but they are nearly full and must be booked in advance by telephoning the Grants Team 0117 9036437/9.

Fuller details below with link to main page and main documents:

See:
Bristol City Council Community Development - Investments & Grants

One-off Grants
Community Development Grants team have commissioned Quartet Community Foundation to manage the small one-off grants. You will need to apply to Quartet Community Foundation for an application form and further information. Please visit www.quartetcf.org.uk

Funding 2009 - 10

The Investment Strategy runs from 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2011 and lays out the objectives for the Community Development Investment Budget. However we are refining the process based on learning from last year's investment round, proposals to move to a commissioning model for some services and the need to move to three-year funding agreements with appropriate voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations.

Applying for funding

We now invite grant applications for up to three years funding from local organisations and groups which fall within the following priorities:

Community centres (including City Farms) and community engagement organisations in deprived neighbourhoods in the city and those serving disadvantaged equalities groups.

Projects to promote community cohesion and which meet our priorities (linked to the local cohesion strategy and intelligence from the Tension Monitoring Group).

Community resource services being delivered in deprived neighbourhoods and specialist information and signposting services for equalities communities.

Organisations will need to show that they offer good value for money, effectively engage their communities, have clear outcomes relating to our strategic priorities and contribute to community cohesion. We will prioritise services being delivered in deprived areas in the City, taking account of applications that deliver services in Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) that fall within the 10% most deprived LSOAs nationally.

We will not fund capital costs or activities where responsibility lies with another Council department or public body, or where there are more appropriate funding sources. We will not fund party political or religious organisations. The grants fund is only for local VCS organisations which have an established constitution and which meet our general conditions and baseline standards as show in BCC General Conditions.

For full information about our funding priorities please see the attached document Investment Funding and Implementation Strategy.

Application packs are available to download from this website. The application deadline is 5.00pm on Friday 19th September 2008.
We are holding three Surgeries on 14th and 19th August and 3rd September for new groups not previously funded by The City Council. The surgeries offer individual groups a chance to talk to the Grants Team about proposed applications in order to see if the services would be eligible for funding and to talk about how the groups can show that they meet or are working towards our baseline standards. The surgeries are free and must be booked in advance by telephoning the Grants Team 0117 9036437/9.
